New Alain Johannes album out today!

Today marks the release of Fragments and Wholes Vol. 1, the first solo album from regular Queens collaborator Alain Johannes in four years.

Alain’s name will be familiar to many of us – having been accurately described by Josh as his own “secret weapon”, Alain has left his mark on every QOTSA album since Songs for the Deaf, made multiple appearances on Desert Sessions records and joined supergroup Them Crooked Vultures onstage for every live show.

On his new album the revered multi-instrumentalist expands on the unique sound he introduced in 2010′s heartfelt and bittersweet Spark, a record written in response to his wife and creative partner Natasha Shneider’s passing.

For an idea of what to expect from the new album, check out an acoustic version of Alain’s track Kaleidoscope below.

QOTSA plays …Like Clockwork at The Wiltern – May 23, 2013

This is an absolutely incredible concert from last night at The Wiltern in Los Angeles courtesy of NPR.org. Enjoy all of the songs from …Like Clockwork (except for Fairweather Friends for some reason) along with a bunch of older tracks. The band has never sounded better:

Era Vulgaris – The Guvernment – Toronto, Canada – 2007

The song Era Vulgaris will always hold a special place in my heart, because TheFade.net helped release the track (which was cut from the album of the same name) back in spring of 2007. QOTSA fans were asked to enter a contest on this website and we got nearly 700 entries. A number of lucky fans had a “special package” arrive in the mail a few days later that was sent by the band, containing a CD titled “You Know What You Did” with this song on it. It was a fun few weeks being involved in this project and this a great song:

Centipede – Sound City Players Soundtrack

While this song (made for the Sound City: Real To Reel documentary) isn’t actually a Queens of the Stone Age track, it was created by Josh Homme and three former QOTSA members (Dave Grohl, Alain Johannes and Chris Goss). The beginning is very reminiscent of the Foo Fighters single “Razor” but the second half of the track turns into a jam that reminds me of Fun Machine. Anyway, if you haven’t heard Centipede yet, it’s worth a listen (or three):
