Queens of the Stone Age had to cut short their set at the opening fixture of the Big Day Out festival at Auckland, New Zeland, today (January 17) after their equipment was beset by gremlins.

The day had passed without incident until the band took the stage at 6pm. They got off to a rocky start almost after their first few notes had been played, with Queens - easily the loudest band of the day so far - proved too much for the PA, which stuttered out leaving them in silence. The band tried 'No One Knows', which occasionally lapsed into silence as the sound cut out completely, and despite them playing determinedly, the audience were left unable to hear.

According to eyewitnesses, the band were "clearly frustrated" as they walked off 30 minutes earlier than expected. Big Day Out organisers took full responsibility for power glitch, stressing it was nothing to do with Queens, and the band were rescheduled to play another set on the fourth stage at 11pm (Auckland time).
